(Based on an advance preview:)  Director Danny Boyle has made films as varied as “Trainspotting” & “Millions”. This new film of his has some elements of each...

...  An Indian teen guy named Jamal (DEV PATEL) is accused of somehow stealing answers to try to win money on the local version of “WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?”...

...  Since he and his older brother Salim had been involved in previous illegal activities (going from slums to bums), the Police demand he EXPLAIN how he knew the answers...

...  Via flashbacks of his past experiences, Boyle cleverly constructs an involved story of crooks, his longtime love Latika (played by FRIEDA PINTO), and the difficult life he’d led before the TV show...

...  You get commentaries on the sometimes thorny experiences of the minority Muslim population in India, what people have to do to get by in life, and how Jamal got to where he is “TODAY”...

...  It’s clever, periodically both funny & sad, and ultimately pretty UPLIFTING and very well-done [& eventually won the “BEST PICTUREOSCAR® in 2009!].
