Review of Film: “BAD TEACHER”

2011, 06-28:

Review of Film:  BAD TEACHER

There’s been a lot of publicity (in newspapers, magazines, etc.) about how CAMERON DIAZ wanted to play a “DIFFERENT” type character in a movie, & how this is “IT”...

...  Elizabeth Halsey (CAMERON DIAZ) is a very pretty teacher.  She’s actually far MORE pretty than she is any real “teacher”.  That’s probably because she simply doesn’t really CARE about teaching...

...  To be blunt, she’s a GOLD-DIGGER, & her only real interest is latching on to someone rich who can give her an EASY life.  She’s found such a guy / chump, & thus she plans to LEAVE a school where she’d been employed for just a year...

...  As announced by Principal Wally Snurr (JOHN MICHAEL HIGGINS), Cameron is leaving to get MARRIED.  The other teachers there pretend to be “sorry” she’s going...

...  But, her fiancĂ©’s mother has “caught-on” to her, “enlightened” her son as to the “facts”, & the chump decides to DUMP the lump (however pretty she might be)...

...  Reluctantly, Cameron decides she needs to RETURN to the school to earn a living while she looks for some OTHER rich guy she might ensnare...

...  She’s depressed over her (self-made) “situation” in life, & regularly turns to BOOZE (even at school) as she has her junior-high kids watch Hollywood MOVIES rather than actually try to “TEACH” them anything personally...

...  Cameron sort of “recruits” teacher Lynn Davies (PHYLLIS SMITH, who plays Phyllis on TV’s “THE OFFICE”), as she’s sort of “desperate” for friends...

...  Due to her looks, Cameron also attracts phys ed teacher Russell Gettis (JASON SEGAL)--  but, since he has NO real money, she has no INTEREST in him, & makes that clear from the get-go (or, the “get-LOST-&-go!” to be precise)...

...  Who should arrive at the school but a somewhat cute-but-“bookish”-looking substitute teacher named Scott Delacorte (JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE).  When she learns he’s in-effect heir to a watch-making family fortune, she suddenly “develops” the “TIME” for him (so-to-speak)...

...  Well, truly-enthusiastic teacher Amy Squirrel (LUCY PUNCH) also takes a shine to Justin, & that makes her in-effect an ENEMY of Cameron’s (& vice-versa)...

...  When she sees how Cameron keeps making “plays” for the guy SHE wants, Lucy starts trying to gather some “DIRT” on Cameron...  One might say, she wants to give her a “LICKING” while she herself keeps on “TICKING” with watch-heir Justin!...

...  Cameron isn’t really a “bad” teacher--  she’s a ROTTEN one!  She not only ignores educating the kids -- such as Garrett Tiara (played by MATTHEW J. EVANS) & Tristan (NOAH MUNCK) --, she actually enjoys HURTING them, by throwing basketballs at them, etc...

...  Please don’t misunderstand--  Cameron does have a “goal”:  namely, finding some way to pay for a “BOOB job” she thinks she needs to help attract the “kind” of person (i.e., rich sucker) she’s looking for...

...  Do you think Cameron would be so “shallow” as to act “sexy” to try to get money from parents of the kids at a student-run CAR wash?...  Would she actually try to “CHARGE” the parents for “assuring” she could get their kids good GRADES?...

...  Well, this is the age of the New “P.-I.” (Politically INCORRECT) world of “comedy”, so, of COURSE she would!...  And, naturally, LUCY would try to “catch” her at things & “REPORT” her to various of the educational “authorities”...

...  Is Justin truly an “anyway-the-WIND-blows” kind of person who would tend to assume whatever “attitude” was held by the person he was WITH at the moment (rather than having any true “convictions” about anything)?...   If so, would Cameron “CATCH-ON” to that & CARE about it?...

...  Will LUCY succeed in getting Cameron in trouble for her “questionable” conduct?...  Will nerdy Justin fall into Cameron’s “web” (& will he be “enough” for her)?...

...  Will Cameron GET the money she’s seeking for her “corrective” work?...  Would that really HELP her in life?...  WHO’ll end-up with who?!...

...  I found this “comedy” sadly “INCONSISTENT”:  The “concept” was far better than its WEAK execution, in that the humor was seldom really “FUNNY” to me (tho some people laughed a fair amount)...

...  Cameron’s character is a “louse”, & then supposedly “CHANGES”--  but, it’s all done in the name of grubbing money, & it’s NOT particularly “believable” or well-written...

...  Other people I know disliked the role Justin played, finding it simply “UNNECESSARY” to the story.  Actually, I found it a “hook” as an “excuse” for what went on.  He played the role as written & did a generally GOOD job at it (& it’s not his fault that the character wasn’t WRITTEN as very funny or with a “spark”!)...

...  Cameron plays her role “OK”--  but, in a way, it’s so “one-dimensional” (as scripted!) that it ends up coming across as somewhat “FLIMSY” overall (tho she probably enjoyed playing such an almost “wicked” role)...

...  It could’ve been so much BETTER --  but, again, it’s because the character wasn’t very “CLEVERLY” written...

...  The BEST work is by LUCY & JASON (& PHYLLIS)-- but that’s because their characters have some “depth” to them, & thus they can “DO” more with them...

...  Thus, I found the film a disappointment overall.  To me, it’s simply NOT particularly “funny” (with far too much of it coming across as “desperate” humor, with an inconsistent “flip” to Cameron’s character for a supposedly “happy” ending).  The concept just doesn’t “HACK” it, to me...

...  And thus, tho it’s not “bad” so much as not very GOOD as a film, I’m rating it as 6.5 out of 10 stars...

Review of film: “LARRY CROWNE” + INFO ON TOM HANKS' CAREER

Review of film:  LARRY CROWNE”  + INFO ON THE CAREER of TOM HANKS

                                   THE FILM LARRY CROWNE”

Downsizing is hitting EVERYONE it seems...  When people started buying less in the way of electronics & the like, the “big boxes” started LAYING-OFF people--  & especially the more highly-compensated older employees (tho they’d never admit that was a “reason”!)...

...  Larry Crowne (TOM HANKS) was one of those people;  he’d worked at such a place (named UMart) ever since he’d left his 20 years of service in the Navy.  As the winner of numerous awards for his good work at the store, he was stunned when told he was being LET GO -- supposedly because of his lack of a college education...

...  Getting a new job at a decent salary proved very difficult, & things kept spiraling “downwards”, what with the need to come up with his mortgage payments & the like...  So he decided to get more EDUCATION, as a means of trying to “start OVER in his life...

...  Seeing his deteriorating economic situation, he tries to buy a Yamaha MOTOR SCOOTER from his neighbor, Lamar (CREDIC THE ENTERTAINER), who, along with his wife B’Ella (TARAJI P. HENSON), are always holding a daily garage sale on their lawn...  Eventually, he gets Cedric to reduce his price to one that’s affordable...

...  At the local community college, one of his teachers (for a Public Speaking class) is the pretty (tho somewhat alcohol-dependent) Mercedes Tainot (JULIA ROBERTS)...

...  Her life hasn’t been overwhelmingly “happy” either, as she’s grown out-of-love with her husband, Dean (BRIAN CRANSTON)--  since he’d prefer watching internet porn rather than trying to get a JOB...

...  All that has (in turn) helped lead her to not care much about TEACHING, either:  she was hoping she could cancel giving her class due to an insufficient number of students --  which “becomes” just enough when TOM arrives for it...

...  Into that “mix” of misfits comes TOM...  He’s cheerful & eager, & most of the other students like him, such as not-super-bright Steve Dibiasi (RAMI MALEK)...

...  Julia doesn’t want to “deal” with teaching, & perdiodically commiserates with fellow teacher Frances (PAM GRIER)...

...  In time, Tom has to go to his other classes, one of which is an Economics course taught by self-important professor Dr. Matsutani (GEORGE TAKEI, from the original “STAR TREK”), who promptly confiscates his cell phone as a distraction...

...  That class helps introduce Tom to perky scooter-riding classmate Talia (GUGU MBATHA-RAW), who promptly starts calling him “Lance” & help him in dressing better & being more “organized”--  which doesn’t thrill her boyfriend, Dell Gordo, a leader of a scooter-riding group (played by WILMER VALDERRAMA from “THAT ’70’s SHOW”)...

...  Altho Tom is considerably older than the other students & scooter-ists, he’s a “PEOPLE”-person & gets along WELL with them, & they enjoy his sincere & outgoing ways -- including taking them to a diner run by an old friend of his named Frank (IAN GOMEZ)...

...  As time goes on, we see the trials & tribulations Tom goes thru--  working on his SPEAKING & ECONOMICS assignments, getting to know JULIA better bit-by-bit (& seeing her increasing falling-out with her husband Brian), & trying to improve his LIFE step-by-step...

...  We meet a lot of other “side” characters, including brief appearances by Wilma Q. Gammelgaard (played by Tom’s actual wife, RITA WILSON) & a pizza delivery boy (played by his real son, CHET, who’s actually a student at Northwestern University who goes under the rapper name “Chet Haze”)...

...  Will Tom & the other Speech students learn how to do WELL in school?...  Will Tom be able to find a steady new JOB he can “live” with?...

...  Will Tom be able to help Julia lay OFF the booze & start to reconstruct her OWN life?...  What will “happen between the two of THEM?...

...  The perhaps-unusual thing about this movie is, it really “WORKS”, all the way thru!  It’s often quite FUNNY (in a “gentle” & “realistic” & periodically “THOUGHT-provoking” way, rather than being “cheesy” or raunchy like so many of the so-called “comedies” nowadays)...

...  Rather than making “fun” of an old-time actor like George Takei, his role has him utilized very EFFECTIVELY— as a “stuffy” character who ends up being funny & quite helpful in teaching Tom concepts that aid him in running his life financially...

...  Likewise, you get to “know” & like all the college kids in his Speaking class, & are PLEASED to see them (& his “scooter” buddies) end up doing WELL in a number of ways...  Tom & Julia & the other characters are fine in their acting roles...

...  The film is charming, successful & a “PICK-ME-UP” in a season when so many of the humorous movies are DIScouraging in their essential “outlooks”...  So, I’m pleased to rate this as an 8.0 out of 10 stars...

                                        * - - - - - - - - - *

INFO ON “LARRY CROWNE” & the CAREER of  TOM HANKS

At this time, I’d like to give you some additional “BACKGROUND” info:

...  Most people tend to think of Tom as an ACTOR .  He started that when he was 24 (in 1980’s HE KNOWS YOU’RE ALONE”), followed by work in the TV series “BOSOM BUDDIES” (1980-82)...

 ...  & such movies as “SPLASH” (1984)...

 “NOTHING IN COMMON” (1986), & “BIG” (1988)...

...  Other of his 64 acting projects include A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN” (1992) & “SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE”...

...  & his award-winning PHILADELPHIA” (both in 1993)...

...  & “FORREST GUMP” (1994)...

...  & “APOLLO 13” (1995)...

...  He started the “TOY STORY” series in 1995, & followed it with such work as “SAVING PRIVATE RYAN”...

...  & “YOU’VE GOT MAIL” (in 1998)...

...  & “THE GREEN MILE” (1999)...

...  “CASTAWAY” (2000)...

...  “ROAD TO PERDITION” (filmed in the Chicago area in 2001)...

...  & “CATCH ME IF YOU CAN” in 2002...

...  In 2004, he starred with notable character actress IRMA P. HALL in his version of “THE LADYKILLERS” for the Coen Brothers...

...  That same year, he did the under-appreciated “THE TERMINAL” & “THE POLAR EXPRESS” (with its motion-sensor work in various roles)...

...  In 2006, he did the voice of “Woody” in “CARS” + starred in “THE DA VINCI CODE”...

...  In 2007, he appeared in “CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR” (with JULIA ROBERTS)...

+ with his son COLIN in “THE GREAT BUCK HOWARD”...  2009 saw him star in “ANGELS & DEMONS”, & he worked as narrator in the TV mini-series “THE PACIFIC” in 2010...

...  But, Tom has also worked in OTHER capacities in the movie industry:  He’s a PRODUCER on “LARRY CROWNE” (as he’s been on like 33 other projects)...

...  He’s also a WRITER on the new film (along with NIA VARDALOS who did “MY BIG, FAT GREEK WEDDING”, on which he was a producer), making this the 6th project he’s done in that capacity (& his 1st feature film since he did “THAT THING YOU DO!” in 1996;  the others have involved TV mini-series)...

...  And, Tom is also the DIRECTOR of this film (as he’s been on 7 other projects, from a 1992 segment of the TV series “TALES FROM THE CRYPT” to “BAND OF BROTHERS” in 2001)...

...  It’s DIFFICULT to do work in multiple disciplines, and it’s even harder to do them WELL...

...  So, if you’ve been seeing Tom on TV (or hearing him on radio) promoting LARRY CROWNE”, it’s because it really is “HIS” movie --  in MANY different ways--,  & it’s one he should be PROUD of on many different “LEVELS”...

Review of film: “AFFINITIES” = Report # 09 re 27th LATINO FILM FESTIVAL

2011, 06-27;  originally seen 04-06:

Review of film:  AFFINITIES”  =  Report # 09 re 27th LATINO FILM FESTIVAL

                           “AFFINITIES / AFINIDADES

Chicago’s LATINO FILM FESTIVAL has announced that, as part of their “REEL FILM” series, they will be screening the above-named Cuban film at the INSTITUTO CERVANTES (31 W. Ohio St. in Chicago 60610;  phone # 312-335-1996) on Tuesday, June 28th...

...  (Please double-check with them about that date:  in one place on Facebook, they stated that it’d be held on the 28th;  but, in another place there, it stated it was to play on Saturday the 25th;  I couldn’t find a clarification on their web-site http://chicago.cervantes.es/ ...)

...  Their announcement said that, at 6 PM, they will be hosting a wine & hors d’oeuvres gathering for the event.  Then, at 7 PM, they will screen the film itself.  The screening cost is $ 20 per person to the general public, or $ 15 for their Members...

...  I originally saw this film (in Spanish, with English subtitles) during the 27th LATINO INT’L FILM FESTIVAL, &, as was  typical of all 3 Cuban films I saw during the Fest, it was unusually WELL-ACTED...

...  Here’s a general description the Fest gave in SPANISH about the movie:

...  In the Schedule of the Festival’s programs, they stated that the movie dealt with people feeling “EMPTY in life, & how it was natural that people feeling that way would seek an “ESCAPE” from that...

...  In the recent announcement, it is very accurately described as a “psychological drama” that deals with “the complexities of human relations”...

...  The main cast consists of the 2 co-directors of the film, JORGE PERUGORRIA and  VLADIMIR CURUZ (who’s also one of its writers), plus CUCU ESCRIBANO & GABRIELA GRIFFITH...

...  There are 2 couples who go on a vacation to an expensive & exclusive resort:  Nestor & Cristina, plus Bruno & Magda...

...  One of the men is rich & OWNS the company the other man works for, & he’s there with his wife.  The employee is there with his girlfriend.  The owner has in-effect “treated” the other couple to the trip--  & the film shows just “WHYhe’s chosen to do that...

...  The Fest stated about the couples that, “their escape is taking refuge in the pleasure of sex”, as a way to “ward off impotence and reaffirm their personalities”...

...  In “practical” terms, what that amounts to is, the boss seems to be encouraging his employee to be with his WIFE— who acts very “open” & “sensual” & appears quite “ENTHUSIASTIC” about that idea...

...  At the same time, the boss seems quite eager to get with his employee’s GIRLFRIEND...  It’s a very “tense” & “electric” type of “DANCEthat keeps going on between the various participants as the film unfolds...

...  Is the boss “encouraging” things as a way of (as the Program puts it) feeling alive& as an “attempt at finding peace and oblivion through sex” --  or is there some “DEEPER” agenda concerning the employee’s trying to save his JOB at the company?...

...  How will each of the vacationers “REACT” to what is going on between the various parties?...  Will there be (as the Program states) “unforeseen consequences” to the actions of the participants?...

...  Do understand that this is an “edgy” & fairly “GRAPHIC” dramatic “exploration” of the subject.  It’s designed for ADULTS, & -- if rated in this country -- might well be “NC-17”...

...  The 90-minute film is (as I said before) very WELL constructed and acted--  but the characters you’ll meet are not necessarily very “NICE” or ”pleasant” people!...

...  I’d rate the film at around 7.25 out of 10 stars as a moviegoing “experience” (tho those who particularly like “uneasy” psychological dramas might rate it higher than that)...

Report on: SHEDD AQUARIUM = “JAZZIN” + JELLIES Exhibit + FIREWORKS

2011, 06-22:

Report on:  SHEDD AQUARIUM =  “JAZZIN” Music + JELLIES Exhibit + FIREWORKS

                               JELLIES Exhibit

On June 22nd, the SHEDD AQUARIUM in Chicago started their series of JAZZIN’ At the Shedd”, wherein they offer live jazz performances each Wednesday nite thru August 31st (except for July 20th)...

...  The event runs from 5 to 10 pm, with performances in the NORTH Terrace section of the Sick Family Lakefront Terrace on the north side of the Aquarium;  the entry is $ 18 per adult & $ 16 for children...

...  My friend Ed B joined me on the opening nite of the “Jazzin’” (which was set-up as a “Member’s Appreciation Nite”)...

...  Upon arrival thru the special side entrance on the South Terrace, we were given white wristbands which identified us as a Member’s group...

...  Inside, we found the Restaurants open, with Soundings” CafĂ© on the Lower Level 1 (+ tables set-up selling specially-prepared hot selections outside of it) & the lower-priced Bubble Net” Food Court on Lower Level 2 (with a roped-off area providing a small “private” section for Members)...  Drinks were also sold (for those of proper age)...

...  We were allowed to view the open marine MAMMAL areas, where we could see the Otters, the Beluga Whales and Pacific white-sided Dolphins swimming around near the Abbott Oceanarium, + the large sea-lion lazing in his Grainger Sea Lion Cove...

...  In the lowest-level “Underwater” viewing section, we looked at the Penguins sitting on the rocks & swimming around happily...

...  Visitors were allowed to view the Shedd’s newest exhibit in the MacArthur Special Exhibit Gallery (“behind” the Oceanarium seating area).  It’s called JELLIES, which has become the term aquariums have begun using for what we used to call “JELLYFISH”...

...  They “changed” the name because the creatures involved are NOT true fish at all (& not even vertebrates):  they’re free-swimming components of the phylum Cnidaria...

...  They’ve been on the Earth for at least 500 million years (way before the dinosaurs existed), & can be found in EVERY ocean (with some even found in fresh water, tho those don’t sting)...  Most have a body structure not unlike an umbrella in shape...

...  I visited the exhibit, which I found FASCINATING and INFORMATIVE...  The jellies move via contraction-pulsations of the bell-shaped area of their bodies...  They have NO brain or central nervous system, or any dedicated circulatory, respiratory or digestive systems...

...  Their bodies are oxygenated by diffusion, and ABSORB nutrients thru a lining of their gastrovascular cavity...  Some jellies are bioluminescent...

...  They’re composed of up to 95% water, and they have varying abilities to sting and inject venom into those creatures that come near their often-lengthy “tentacles” (only some of which cause bad reactions in humans)...

...  Yes, all-in-all, they appear quite “OTHER-worldly in many ways (& have survived numerous episodes of mass extinction on this planet)!...

...  The exhibit has a figurine of the longest jelly, the Lion’s Mane, which can have tentacles reaching-out up to 120 feet (36.5 meters)...

...  The giant Nomura’s jellyfish (found in the western Pacific near China, Korea & Japan) can grow to weigh more than 400 pounds  (200+ kg)...

...  Shedd has shown the “MOON” jelly for a number of years...

...  In 2008, such jellies (each up to a basketball in size) came together by the hundreds & clogged the intake pipes of a NUCLEAR power plant in California...  (And, other jellies clogged a power plant in the Philippines in 1999)...

...  In Northern Ireland, there was a coastal salmon farm which had an invasion of billions of mauve stinger jellies in 2007.  They caused nearly $ 2 million in damage by killing ALL the salmon there...

...  For this exhibit. The Shedd has added a number of more “exotic” types of jellies than they’ve displayed before, such as the “egg yolk” variety (named because that’s what it tends to look like, as seen below)...

...  One of the numerous plaques gave information on what a jelly’s “mouth” is used for (as shown above)...

...  Another showed how a jelly helped advance MEDICINE...

...  One of the more unusual-looking varieties was an “UPSIDE-DOWN” jelly (as shown below)...

...  It lies that way on the ocean floor & holds algae which helps further photosynthesis...

...  Sometimes, jellies reproduce in massive numbers (since they can lay thousands of eggs each day).  Such events are called “BLOOMS”, & it’s still unclear why they happen when --  & to the extent --  that they do...

...  When times become severe, up to 500 million jellies can float into the Sea of Japan EVERY day.  Since they can each be the size of a refrigerator (as pictured below), that can cause numerous problems for fisherman and people near the shore!...

...  Sometimes, jellies can eat so much, they double their weight in a day...

... One of the prettiest varieties shown in the exhibit was the purple-striped jellies...

...  Another interesting one was the sea nettle...

...  And, here’s another intriguing variety...

...  Plus, one with some wide tentacles...

                                        * - - - - - - - - - *

                                               “JAZZIN

...  Around 7 pm, Ed and I went out onto the north Terrace as they announced the MUSIC would be starting soon...

...  The VIEWS from the (tent-enclosed) Terrace are beautiful

...  We happily looked at the city’s skyline & harbor area...

...  Before it started, they held a little “contest” for the audience.  Near us, there was a table with two young clean-cut couples...  One man (in a dark blue striped shirt) went up & answered some questions, for which he was happy to win a “Jellies” MUG (as shown below on the table)...

...  Later, the host announced people could go upstairs & sign-up for a “raffle” to possibly win the aquarium’s special BELUGA ENCOUNTER” (valued at $ 250-350) wherein a person can don waders & enter into the WATER in the Encounter Habitat..

...  There, you can join with a trainer on a ledge & TOUCH a Beluga whale & help with some training techniques...

...  The couples mentioned above decided to go upstairs & enter the contest...  And, at one point, Ed & I also went up to put our names in for the raffle...

...  Near the main hall, we found there were small BANDS playing in various halls, + more FOOD available for sale from tables & booths around the area...  There were even tables set up around the Pritzker Caribbean Reef where people could watch numerous species swimming around in the large tank...

...  While upstairs, we went thru the always-interesting AMAZON RISING exhibit, & looked at the fish, + a weird-looking flat-headed Mata Mata TURTLE swimming around (as seen below)...

...  And also a caiman lizard in the water...

...  We returned to the North Terrace, &, from seats right by the far-north wall, we looked at the skyline some more, with views enhanced by a series of dramatic fast-moving CLOUDS overhead...

...  While there, a host announced the results of the BELUGA ENCOUNTER raffle...  Remember the couples mentioned above?...  One of the young women (named Emma) was very surprised (& thrilled) when she WON the prize for a future Encounter!...

...  Around 7:30 PM, the JAZZ started, provided by the talented DETOUR JAZFUNK group, consisting of PHIL SEED on guitar, BEN “Jammin” JOHNSON on drums, KENERY KENT SMITH on bass, and TIM GANT on keyboards (as pictured in photos below)...

...  It was very relaxing & enjoyable to listen to the music...

...  And to see the LIGHTS come in the gorgeous SKYLINE views off to the northwest...

...  Then more JAZZ...

...  And still more CITY SKYLINE sights...

                                        * - - - - - - - - - *

                                      FIREWORKS

...  Around 9:30 PM, the FIREWORKS show started at the east end of NAVY PIER (to the north of where we sat on the Terrace)...

...  There were BEAUTIFUL sights as the fireworks continued...

...  And, the colorful display had a VARIETY of “types” of fireworks...

...  All of which could be EASILY seen from the Terrace...

...  And all of which was ENJOYED by those there...

...  Plus appreciated by those who viewed from the lower-level Sick Family Lakefront Terrace located outside the “Soundings CafĂ©”...

...  So, you had the music...

...  And nice warm weather...

...  Plus dramatic VIEWS of Chicago...

...  And an impressive 10-15-minute FIREWORKS show...

...  All in all...

...  A RELAXING...

...  And very PLEASURABLE experience, which I heartily RECOMMEND...

...  On June 29th, the Band will be the BILL BORIS GROUP (which plays “straight-ahead jazz, funk and R&B”...

...  July 6th, they will feature trumpeter GREG DUNCAN with his QUINTET Group...
