Report on talk by NASA astronaut JOHN GRUNSFELD on repairing HUBBLE TELESCOPE

Report on talk by NASA astronaut JOHN GRUNSFELD on repairing HUBBLE TELESCOPE

On June 23, 2009, Chicago’s MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY hosted the first talk by astronaut JOHN GRUNSFELD since his historic space mission around 1 month before to service the HUBBLE telescope orbiting around earth.  A crowd of 150 or so people were treated to a fascinating, educational, humor-filled talk (after he was introduced by the Museum’s President).

...  Using videos and slides, Dr. Grunsfeld gave the history of the ground-breaking work done in the Midwest by astronomer EDWIN HUBBLE for whom the telescope is named.  He explained how the telescope [conceived in the 1960’s] was designed to avoid interference by the Earth’s atmosphere (which causes the “twinkling” effect seen in stars)…

Dr. Grunsfeld spoke of how his family (including his sister in the audience) lived in the Hyde Park area of Chicago, & spent many enjoyable hours visiting the MSI as he was growing up.  He talked about his long and growing interest in the Space program, & how he worked hard to become an astronaut (which was a goal of some of the kids in the audience, as shown by a raising of hands)…

During the talk, Dr. G gave some of the historical background of the creation of telescopes 400 years ago and how Italian scientist Galileo created major improvements to the design and used them to discover 4 moons of Jupiter, sunspots and numerous other findings. When his discoveries caused him to support the [Copernicus] position that the Earth was NOT the center of our universe (with the Sun rotating around Earth), the Catholic Church [in 1615] worked to try to force him to change his stance. Dr. G kidded that some people --  such as Chicago’s Mayor Daley --  STILL consider that the world revolves around “us” here!…

Continuing his talk about the background of the HUBBLE telescope [which was designed to be serviceable in space], Dr. Grunsfeld related how the original launch date was planned for October of 1986 --  but that was stopped by the disaster that befell space shuttle Challenger, which necessitated investigations on how to make space efforts more safe and reliable.  He spoke of how continuing manufacturing delays & vast cost overruns (of 6x the original $ 400 million estimate) delayed the launch still more…

Finally, on April 24, 1990, the Hubble was LAUNCHED.  But, it was immediately found that the main mirror on the ‘scope [as constructed by Perkin-Elmer] had been ground INCORRECTLY, making it virtually USELESS for its main intended use as the images were “fuzzy” & UNSHARP!  There were detailed investigations into how the errors occurred, who was to blame, & what could be done to FIX the massive problem…

Finally, in December, 1993, seven astronauts went up [on Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS61] with specialized tools designed to FIX the main problems with the telescope-- including installing new gyroscopes & revising its basic orbit.  In effect, they put the equivalent of “CONTACT LENSES” over the defective mirror, allowing it to eventually achieve sharp resolutions considerably BEYOND what was originally hoped-for…  He showed some EXAMPLES of the fabulous images obtained by the telescope…

Dr. Grunsfeld spoke of his own Space Flight experience, including an Endeavour mission [STS-67] on March 2-18, 1995 during which observations were done concerning faint astronomical objects, ultraviolet light from distant galaxies & hot stars, etc…  He went up again as flight engineer [on STS-81] in ATLANTIS, which did numerous experiments [& docked with Russian Space Station Mir] between January 12-22, 1997…

On his 3rd mission (STS-103 in DISCOVERY, Dec. 19-27, 1999), he & his crew installed upgraded systems on the HUBBLE TELESCOPE, including new gyroscopes & specialized scientific instruments during 2 space walks…

Grunsfeld was involved [as payload commander] in the 4th servicing mission on HUBBLE, which occurred between March 1-12, 2002 in COLUMBIA [STS-109]. He showed slides of the huge new digital camera that was installed along with new solar arrays, a new power system & a cooling system for the infrared camera.  He himself did 3 Space Walks [totaling 21+ hours]…

His latest Space mission occurred on May 11-24 of 2009 in ATLANTIS [STS-125], which was designed to be the 5th & LAST-scheduled Servicing mission on HUBBLE.  Dr. Grunsfeld proudly related how NASA had estimated their trip would be considered a success if they accomplished HALF of the hoped-for work--  yet, they were thrilled to have succeeded at accomplishing ALL the hoped-for efforts, & in fact added & succeeded in some UNSCHEDULED NEW projects beyond the original plans!…

As he spoke of the mission, Dr. Grunsfeld showed slides & a VIDEO detailing some of the work done retrofitting the now 19-year-old telescope in the Shuttle’s cargo bay. They had to unscrew tiny screws, deal with frozen and defective items, etc.  There were 5 daily spacewalks, which helped install and rejuvenate four scientific instruments, new gyroscopes & batteries, plus a new computer.  It’s hoped that the HUBBLE will last another 10-20 years, after which a NEW device will have to be put into orbit…

With clear excitement and devotion to what he does, astronaut Grunsfeld spoke of how the HUBBLE has allowed us to gather visual evidence of the dawn of the universe around 19 billion years ago, & how it’s hoped the new work will allow it to discover secrets about mysteries such as about DARK MATTER.  He showed his favorite shot from the telescope (of another universe), and spoke of how it’s been shown that the galaxy is ever EXPANDING & systems keep moving AWAY from each other…

He said (as I recall) that it’s expected that our Solar system will eventually CRASH into the ANDROMEDA system--  but that will be many BILLIONS of years in the future.  He added, there’s no reason to ‘worry” about that--  because, even BEFORE that happens, it’s expected that our own Sun will EXPLODE & burn off all planets like ours--  but that also is a number of BILLIONS of years in the future, & nothing worth “concerning” ourselves with at this point!…

Near the end of his talk, Dr. Grunsfeld happily took QUESTIONS from the audience, & specially went out of his way to engage the YOUNG people there.  He said yes, he feels there definitely ARE other places which have LIFE on them, tho it may be far different than what WE know of here on earth.  He pointed out how, until relatively recently, it was felt there were NO other planets in the universe--  yet, in the past 20 or so years, we’ve discovered at least 350 other planets in various galaxies, there are BILLIONS of as-yet-UNexplored galaxies, & thus there are likely to be BILLIONS of planets, some of which should certainly have SOME forms of life…

Dr. Grunsfeld spoke of UPCOMING space efforts, & how there are plans to try to find signs of WATER on both the MOON & MARS, both from robotic explorations and even eventual MANNED visits--  tho those latter efforts are likely to be some decades away in the future.  Besides introducing his wife & son Mace and other family members in the audience, he happily spoke of his LOVE for scientific discovery & how much he enjoys encouraging OTHER people in their efforts…

After his discourse (which lasted more than twice as long as the originally-scheduled 45-minute talk), Dr. Grunsfeld happily signed AUTOGRAPHS for members of the audience, and went out of his way to personalize them, with the first NAMES of various people.  My only “complaint” about the event is that I hadn’t brought a VIDEO camera to record the fascinating event!

After getting an autograph from Dr. Grunsfeld (who I sincerely complimented on doing a wonderful job in his talk), I went & saw the Omnimax movie “WILD OCEAN" (which I reviewed previously in my writeups this week)...

Review: of the re-opened SHEDD AQUARIUM & its “4-D” film

Review:  of the re-opened SHEDD AQUARIUM in Chicago & its “4-D” film  =

If you haven't been to the SHEDD AQUARIUM in Chicago lately, you have missed various "4-D" experiences --  including their showing some (extra-charge) specially-made short 4-D MOVIES which are interspersed with special-effects such as shaking seats, sprayed water, etc....

... But, rather than concentrate on those films (re Sponge Bob, etc.), I want to concentrate on OTHER "4-D" type encounters in the form of the MAIN Aquarium, especially regarding their just-finished UPGRADING:

After being closed for around 8 months (since September of '08), the SHEDD AQUARIUM is re-opening their large "OCEANARIUM" section this Memorial Day weekend.  I attended a Member's preview, & here is my report on the situation:

...  Between the Aquarium & Planetarium, the City finally re-opened a redone Solidarity Drive- where they'd built a nicely-done UNDERPASS for a new bike, skating & walking path...

...  This path curves north and east around the periphery of the Aquarium, & continues south at the west edge of the Harbor (towards McCormick Place)...

...  But, they have NOT reopened the numerous PARKING meters on that road, leaving them covered up with cloth hoods for some reason.  (I don't know if they haven't changed the rates yet, or it they're even going to allow parking there anytime soon)...

...  So, if driving (rather than taking the various CTA buses & Trolleys to the area), you've got to use the street-level parking lot southwest of the Planetarium ( $ 16 on up; cash only) or the Field Museum lot ($ 19 on up) or the Soldier Field lots...
...  Regarding the renovated OCEANARIUM section in the Aquarium:  altho they just resurfaced the main pools for the beluga whales & Pacific white-sided dolphins (rather than enlarging them), they've done a quite GOOD job redesigning the "PERIPHERAL" areas:

...  They revised the layout of a number of the "ROCK" areas so it'd be easier for the trainers to INTERACT with the animals (including platforms around the sides of the pools) & to give the public better VIEWS of certain areas...

...  Also revised was the layout of the SEATING areas for the dolphin shows (including separate upraised "SIDE" platforms where trainers could speak to the audience and where sea lions could perform)...

...  The regular mammal SHOWS will not be restarted for the public until some time in JULY (altho employees are continuing their regular TRAINING of the various animals)...

...  Especially welcome were the improvements in the SEA-LION area west of the south beluga whale tank:

...  It's around 2 to 3 times LARGER than the sort of "cubby-hole" they'd had before, with a chain-link fence allowing clear views of that exhibit.  That not only allows you to better SEE & enjoy the animals, that gives more ROOM for those mammals to stretch out on their rocks or in their pool...

...  There were some new little EXHIBITS on the "rock" wall southwest of the beluga tank, and lots of additional INFORMATION posted about the various fish and mammals...

... In the basement LOWER viewing level, there are lots of changes:  they've built new sections with EXHIBITS of various creatures (shrimps, etc.), again with informational areas all around for a more "INTERACTIVE" experience...

...  There are new "portholes" to view the BELUGA whales from "below", + an interactive exhibit demonstrating SOUNDS they make...

...  And, there's a mock "SUBMARINE" where kids can manipulate a "claw"-arm device to grasp things on the "ocean" floor...

...  They've added a bunch of new SEATING areas allowing people to eat (from the expanded RESTAURANT area there) while watching the underwater antics of the mammals...

...  One of the favorite new lower-level sections is a large "PENGUIN-experience" one for kids:  this allows them to walk around "among" pictures of penguins & to ACT like penguins (such as shooting down "snow" SLIDES-- which the kids seemed to love doing!)...

...  There is a lot more INFORMATION about penguins (including pictures of some of the 17 species & life-sized statues of some)...

...  There's been a big IMPROVEMENT in the temperature control and / or the GLASS used to VIEW the penguins (& also the OTTERS), making it much easier to see them without having to look thru horribly "fogged-up" areas as the temperature is kept around 55 or so degreees)...

...  While I was there, they offered a very informative TALK about otters (at their improved tank layout)-- how they use tools to eat, how much hair they have, their habits, etc....

...  One of the favorites of kids was a large new interactive area at the north end of the lower-level where they learn about and actually TOUCH a bunch of underwater creatures -- STARFISH, barnacles, etc.  The kids (shepherded by their parents) happily went around from tank to tank to "sample" what was there (& to wash their hands before & afterwards)...

...  The Aquarium has also considerably revised the layouts & size of the RESTAURANTS (such as the Bubble Net), making them bigger & adding outdoor seating areas to the north and northwest, allowing fine views of the downtown Chicago skyline...

...  In the MAIN (upper-level) areas of the Aquarium, they've added more GIFTSHOP areas (including at the "end" of the Amazon Rising exhibit) & more booth type areas to get some SNACKS (popcorn, etc.) & PHOTOS of your visit...

...  It's hard to quantify, but there seems an increase in the number & VARIETY of species displayed--  more colorful rays and frogs in the Amazon exhibit, more diversity in the Wild Reef exhibit (including showing types of coral), etc.

...  The Aquarium is also offering BEHIND-THE-SCENES tours (at $ 10 per person) up to 3 or so times daily on certain days...

All-in-all, it appears to be an EFFECTIVE & WELL-DONE series of improvements for the viewing public...

Review of film: “I LOVE YOU, MAN” – And thank you for all the BIG LAUGHS you provided!

Review of film:  I LOVE YOU, MANAnd thank you for all the BIG LAUGHS you provided!  =

                         Rating:  9.5 of 10 stars.

(Per an advance preview:)  It was a real PLEASURE, after a slew of comparatively “mild” comedies opening recently, to see this one which provided LOADS of really HEARTY LAUGHS

Peter (wonderfully played by PAUL RUDD) is a man who has always gotten along exceptionally well with women, but who’d found it hard to do the same with most GUYS...

...  Since he’s about to marry his girlfriend (effectively played by RASHIDA JONES), he finds he needs to cultivate some good MALE friends for his wedding party…

His gay personal trainer brother (comfortably played by ANDY SAMBERG) tries to help him, but things keep going wrong...

...  He then chances to meet a shockingly-blunt but very-attuned-to-others guy named Sydney (JASON SEGEL, finely controlled compared to his ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ character, & quite funny), who shares his love of ‘Rush’ and helps Peter open up more to himself & the world around him…

It’s pretty riotous as they get to bro-mantically know each other & share experiences including Syd’s efforts to help Peter with his real estate problems. Lots of FUN for those appreciating clever R-rated adult-themed humor.

Review of film: “THE WRESTLER” — He Grapples with LIFE as much as with other athletes

Review of film:  THE WRESTLERHe Grapples with LIFE as much as with other athletes =

     Rating:  9.5 of 10 stars:

Date Rated: Mar 1, 2009 | Rel. Date: Dec 17, 2008

I finally was able to see this film that got so many rave reviews for star MICKEY ROURKE. He (and director ARANOFSKY) deserved the accolades, because he gives an incendiary type performance as a wrestler still trying to do small shows 20 years after his hey-day in the ring...

...  You not only see him suffering for his “art”, but also working hard in his relationships with co-workers, friends (such as MARISA TOMEI in a gutsy role of a stripper trying to earn money for raising a young son), his estranged daughter (EVAN RACHEL WOOD) and others...

...  The ambience is strongly improved by scenes of the camaraderie, respect and concern between his fellow wrestlers, incidents of his having to deal with people in his “DAY” job at a food store (especially at a deli counter), his handling problems with his deteriorating health, & others...

...  An impressive film, for which he deserved his Oscar nomination as Leading Actor— tho I still feel SEAN PENN deserved to win it for his more complex performance in “MILK”.

Review of film: “UNDER THE SEA 3D” -- An Octopus’ Garden of DELIGHT

Review of film:    UNDER THE SEA 3D   --  An Octopus’ Garden of DELIGHT =

                        [ RATING: 9.5 of 10 stars ]

Date Rated: Feb 13, 2009 | Rel. Date: Feb 13, 2009
(Based on an advance preview): This new IMAX documentary (calmly narrated by JIM CARREY) is a WONDERFULLY done and enjoyable film...

...  While I’d expected to see mainly just the “usual suspects” in sea-based films, this one has loads of fabulous footage of many SELDOM-seen species such as (color- and texture-changing) cuttlefish, sea dragons, squid, jellyfish, Australian sea lions and others...

...  The natural camouflage and actions of some of these creatures is often mind-boggling, and the 3-D format just ADDS to the depth and appreciation for what has been achieved...

...  Besides being fascinating and beautiful, the film also points out the ever-increasing DANGERS to the sea environment caused by rising temperatures and increased pollution...

...  Overall, a really impressive and pleasurable effort, HIGHLY recommended & so good I wish it had been much LONGER in length!...

Review of film: “FROST / NIXON” – A reminder we need to hold politicians immediately ACCOUNTABLE

Review of film:    FROST / NIXON  A reminder we need to hold politicians immediately ACCOUNTABLE  =
                     [ Rating:  9.5 of 10 stars ]
Date Rated: Jan 1, 2009 | Rel. Date: Dec 5, 2008
“I let down the American people.”

... That’s a seminal line spoken in Howard's film which recalls how British entertainer David Frost got just-resigned President RICHARD NIXON to appear in a series of interviews that he offered in syndication...

...  FRANK LANGELLA gives a performance as Nixon that I feel is worthy of an OSCAR nomination. MICHAEL SHEEN does a fine job as Frost, ably abetted by strong performances by the other main actors: OLIVER PLATT, SAM ROCKWELL & MATHEW MACFADYEN on Frost’s side, & KEVIN BACON...

... The fine documentary film “WHY WE FIGHT” shows Nixon was sadly not alone in American Presidents who’ve DECEIVED the public for their own ends and agendas...

...  In this day & age (when Illinois has an arrogant Hot Air Peacock governor [Blagoyovich] who apparently has further tarnished the reputation of promise-shirking politicians), this very WELL-DONE film (one of the best of ’08) reminds us we need to be far more questioning (& less forgiving) of those politicians who BETRAY the people & their trust.
