Review of film: “AFFINITIES” = Report # 09 re 27th LATINO FILM FESTIVAL

2011, 06-27;  originally seen 04-06:

Review of film:  AFFINITIES”  =  Report # 09 re 27th LATINO FILM FESTIVAL

                           “AFFINITIES / AFINIDADES

Chicago’s LATINO FILM FESTIVAL has announced that, as part of their “REEL FILM” series, they will be screening the above-named Cuban film at the INSTITUTO CERVANTES (31 W. Ohio St. in Chicago 60610;  phone # 312-335-1996) on Tuesday, June 28th...

...  (Please double-check with them about that date:  in one place on Facebook, they stated that it’d be held on the 28th;  but, in another place there, it stated it was to play on Saturday the 25th;  I couldn’t find a clarification on their web-site http://chicago.cervantes.es/ ...)

...  Their announcement said that, at 6 PM, they will be hosting a wine & hors d’oeuvres gathering for the event.  Then, at 7 PM, they will screen the film itself.  The screening cost is $ 20 per person to the general public, or $ 15 for their Members...

...  I originally saw this film (in Spanish, with English subtitles) during the 27th LATINO INT’L FILM FESTIVAL, &, as was  typical of all 3 Cuban films I saw during the Fest, it was unusually WELL-ACTED...

...  Here’s a general description the Fest gave in SPANISH about the movie:

“ ... Ante el vacío y la falta de explicación racional para muchos de los problemas del mundo, es natural que alguien busque una vía de escape. Para los protagonistas de esta película, su huida se refugia en el placer del sexo. Ellos usan el sexo como una forma de sentirse vivos, una manera de evitar la impotencia y reafirmar su personalidad que han sido arrancada por la soledad. El resultado de su dependencia y su intento por encontrar la paz y el olvido a través del sexo tendrá consecuencias imprevistas. ”

...  In the Schedule of the Festival’s programs, they stated that the movie dealt with people feeling “EMPTY in life, & how it was natural that people feeling that way would seek an “ESCAPE” from that...

...  In the recent announcement, it is very accurately described as a “psychological drama” that deals with “the complexities of human relations”...

...  The main cast consists of the 2 co-directors of the film, JORGE PERUGORRIA and  VLADIMIR CURUZ (who’s also one of its writers), plus CUCU ESCRIBANO & GABRIELA GRIFFITH...

...  There are 2 couples who go on a vacation to an expensive & exclusive resort:  Nestor & Cristina, plus Bruno & Magda...

...  One of the men is rich & OWNS the company the other man works for, & he’s there with his wife.  The employee is there with his girlfriend.  The owner has in-effect “treated” the other couple to the trip--  & the film shows just “WHYhe’s chosen to do that...

...  The Fest stated about the couples that, “their escape is taking refuge in the pleasure of sex”, as a way to “ward off impotence and reaffirm their personalities”...

...  In “practical” terms, what that amounts to is, the boss seems to be encouraging his employee to be with his WIFE— who acts very “open” & “sensual” & appears quite “ENTHUSIASTIC” about that idea...

...  At the same time, the boss seems quite eager to get with his employee’s GIRLFRIEND...  It’s a very “tense” & “electric” type of “DANCEthat keeps going on between the various participants as the film unfolds...

...  Is the boss “encouraging” things as a way of (as the Program puts it) feeling alive& as an “attempt at finding peace and oblivion through sex” --  or is there some “DEEPER” agenda concerning the employee’s trying to save his JOB at the company?...

...  How will each of the vacationers “REACT” to what is going on between the various parties?...  Will there be (as the Program states) “unforeseen consequences” to the actions of the participants?...

...  Do understand that this is an “edgy” & fairly “GRAPHIC” dramatic “exploration” of the subject.  It’s designed for ADULTS, & -- if rated in this country -- might well be “NC-17”...

...  The 90-minute film is (as I said before) very WELL constructed and acted--  but the characters you’ll meet are not necessarily very “NICE” or ”pleasant” people!...

...  I’d rate the film at around 7.25 out of 10 stars as a moviegoing “experience” (tho those who particularly like “uneasy” psychological dramas might rate it higher than that)...
