2012, 04-20:
Report # 01 on the 28th LATINO FILM
FESTIVAL in Chicago: Overview
Twenty-seven years ago (in 1985),
a bunch of people got together to start the Chicago LATINO FILM FESTIVAL...
... From those humble
beginnings (-- just 500 people watching 14
movies! --), the operation grew into what is now known as the INTERNATIONAL
LATINO CULTURAL CENTER (ILCC), headquartered at 676 N LaSalle St.
(Suite 520) in Chicago; phone #
312-409-1757; their web-site (which has
a daily schedule of films available) is www.LatinoCulturalCenter.org ...
... One of the most “visible” examples of the ILCC in Chicago’s stage is their
continuing production of the Chicago LATINO
FILM FESTIVAL (CLFF). The 28th Festival runs
from Friday, April 13 thru
Thursday, April 26...
... The Festival this year features Films in the Categories of: ACTION, ANIMATION,
COMEDY, DOCUMENTARY, DRAMA (of
various types including Biographical, Family, Historical, & Political), HORROR,
LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender & Queer), SCI-FI, THRILLER, WESTERN, & WOMEN IN FILM; plus around 47 SHORT films (which are usually shown preceding certain of
the feature films)...
... The films will mainly be shown in 4 theaters at
the Landmark
CENTURY Centre Cinema (2828 N. Clark St.; phone # 773-509-4949),
and at the INSTITUTO CERVANTES (31 W. Ohio St.; phone # 312-335-1996)...
... There are various Partners of the
Festival, including various colleges, restaurants, hotels, and the Beverly Arts Center (2407 W. 111th
Street)...

The
Festival scheduled 3 Special EVENTS
for this year’s Festival:
... On Friday, April 13: OPENING Night, featuring the showing of Spanish director
Ventura Pons’ film “YEAR OF
GRACE” (“ANY DE GRACIA”) about an unusual relationship between a
male college student and a senior citizen lady renting out a room to him. (It’s a finely
done, very well-acted & enjoyable film, which I hope to speak about more in
the future)...
... On Monday, April 16th, they had a
special premiere of the U.S. / Mexican film “MARIACHI GRINGO”...
... On
Wednesday, April 18th: “BRAZILIAN Night / Noite Do Brasil”, sponsored by the the
restaurant Texas de Brazil. The
film honored was “CAPTAIN OF
THE SANDS” / “CAPITÃES DE AREIA” by Directors Cecilia Amado & Guy Gonzalvez (which
will also show on April 20th , after which I hope to Review
it).
... On Wednesday, April 25, the “CLOSING” film will be an Argentina / Spain production “CHNESE TAKE-AWAY”, by
Director Sebastián Borensztein. This tribute to ARGENTINA is
about a bitter man who decides to let a homeless Chinese man live at his
house...
... The film will start at 6 pm at the AMC River
East 21 (322 E. Illinois). Afterwards,
at 8:30 pm, there will be a Cocktail Reception and Live Entertainment down the
street at the River East Art Center (435 W. Illinois). Tickets are $ 75 / or $ 65 for ILCC members.
