Review of film: "OUR IDIOT BROTHER" ( starring PAUL RUDD )

2011, 08-22:

Review of filmOUR IDIOT BROTHER

Have you ever been around an extremely “TRUSTING” and good-hearted person who tends to be a bit “OBLIVIOUS” of reality?...  That’s a good description of Ned (PAUL RUDD)...

...  Paul loves the “simple” life such as FARMING, & happily runs a vegetable stand at a sort of Farmer’s Market in a small town...

...  There, a local COP, Officer Washburn (BOB STEPHENSON), comes by, claims he’d been having a “hard time” in life, & urges Paul to find him some “WEED” to smoke...

...  Paul points out, that’s sort of an odd request coming froma LAW-enforcement officer.  The cop says, well, he’s just “human” & NEEDS some of it to relax...  Paul then trustingly GIVES him some at no charge--  only to have the cop ARREST him & put him in JAIL for the “sale” of an illegal substance!...

...  When Paul gets out, his old girlfriend Janet (KATHRYN HAHN) on their farm won’t even let him STAY there anymore, feeling he’s unreliable & in-effect an IDIOT for the way he gave weed to a cop in plain sight of others...

...  Not only is she unkind to him when he’d long WORKED on the farm (which he loved), she bosses around her new boyfriend Billy (T.J. MILLER) & insists he not even allow Paul to take his DOG “Willie Nelson” as he wants to do...

...  Needing somewhere to stay, Paul goes to the different homes of his SISTERS...

...  One sister, Cindy (RASHIDA JONES) is a lesbian who happily lives with her lover Natalie (ZOOEY DESCHANEL)...

...  Other sisters are Miranda (ELIZABETH BANKS) and Liz (EMILY MORTIMER)...

...  The sisters don’t hesitate to tell Paul that he’s an “IDIOT”, detailing what he’s done that upsets them...

...  It reaches a point that, Paul HIMSELF keeps telling others that he’s an “idiot”, & seems “unconcerned” about that situation--  simply going “blithely” along in life doing FOOLISH things:

...  He rides on a New York area subway and asks a young stranger to hold some CASH for him for a minute while he “rearranges” himself in the seating area...

...  He talks to his PAROLE officer & foolishly opens-up to him about how he’s smoking WEED again...

...  It’s not that his sisters have any perfect personalities or lives:  one has a cheating “photographer” husband Dylan (STEVE COOGAN), which PAUL inadvertently “reveals” to the sister (which naturally leads to “complications”)...

...  Another sister is exceptionally BOSSY around her live-in boyfriend Jeremy (ADAM SCOTT), who’s one of the few people who tends to treat Paul decently...

...  To put it bluntly, Paul’s often a SCREW-UP --  a hippyish “SLACKER” who may have good “intentions” but very imperfect “FOLLOW-THRU”...

...  Will Paul make a “go” of a new JOB opportunity?...   Will he be able to get his dog back from his ex-girlfriend?...

...  Will he be able to create an effective NEW relationship with a girlfriend?...  Will he get his sisters to start RESPECTING him more?...

...  Paul Rudd is one of my favorite comedy actors.  He usually does a wonderful “UNDERSTATED” job.  While he’s good in this, I found his character written as being very “ONE-NOTE”, with the way he kept acting so “dim” & insisting the problems around him were due to “MIS-COMMUNICATIONS” & the like...

...  Tho there’s a periodically interesting “conglomeration” of characters in this movie, sadly, I found almost all the writing disappointingly WEAK, with a great dearth of CLEVERNESS, & most of the “relationships” thus didn’t “GO” much of anywhere of worth...

...  While this film seemed to be one of the “favorites” at the SUNDANCE Festival, to me, there was little real “SPARK” inherent in the almost-disappointing “doings” of most of the people we meet...  People acting inherently “DENSE” just isn’t my “cup of chocolate”...

...  Some people may have found the purposely-“quirky-ish” tone in this film to be sort of “charming”-- but I’m sorry to say I found it SUB-PAR & just mildly funny...  Thus, my rating is a disenchanted 7.0 out of 10 stars...

Review of film: “THE DEBT”

2011, 08-30:

Review of film:  THE DEBT

This espionage-based ACTION / THRILLER starts off in 1997 with our introduction to  three senior citizens living in ISRAEL...

...  Sarah Gold (RAMI ABOULAFIA) has proudly written a book about the exploits of her mother, Rachel Singer (HELEN MIRREN), who was an AGENT in Israel’s Mossad secret service...

...  Helen had worked with two other agents, her now-husband Stephan Gold (TOM WILKINSON) and David Peretz (CIARÁN HINDS), on a mission to kidnap an infamous NAZI doctor, Dieter Vogel (JESPER CHRISTENSEN), & bring him back to TRIAL in Israel for committing unspeakable medical experiments on people...

...  But, when Ciarán is picked-up for a planned meeting with his compatriots before the formal book-release party, he appears to commit SUICIDE...

...  That brings us to enter the world of flashbacks, in the form of meeting the 3 agents when they were YOUNGER & in Berlin planning the kidnap of Jesper thirty years before, in 1966...

...  Young Stephan (played by MARTON CZOKAS) is in-effect the boss of the mission...

...  He’s always trying to “get” with young Rachel (JESSICA CHASTAIN), tho quiet detached young David (SAM WORTHINGTON) seems to also be silently interested in her from “afar”...

...  They work to practice their martial tactics & to hone their plans re HOW they’ll kidnap Jesper, who at this time is working in communist East Berlin disguised as a Doktor Bernhardt...

...  The plan is for Jessica to pretend to be married to David & to go to the Doktor to supposedly get help with a fertility problem...  Knowing his past crimes, she finds it very DIFFICULT to “deal” with him, especially on such an “intimate” level...

...  Overall, the idea is to incapacitate the Doktor & get him to an above-ground Rapid Transit train from free West Berlin that chances to run for a short portion in EAST Berlin behind the Berlin Wall (in an area which is patrolled by EAST German guards)...

...  They want to cut thru the fence to get to the train & use that to “spirit” the Doktor to an airfield in West Berlin that’d allow him to be secretly taken directly to ISRAEL for TRIAL concerning his Nazi-era crimes...

...  Periodically, the time-period flashes back & forth between the 2 main periods of the movie--  the original SECRET MISSION (in 1966) & the “aftermath” (in 1997) wherein Helen is at “loggerheads” with her wheelchair-bound Secret Agent husband over what really “HAPPENED” to CIARÁN (who’d “disappeared” shortly after their return to Israel after the Mission)...

...  How had the original “kidnap” plans GONE in 1966?...  What SECRETS will we learn about the relationships between the 3 agents & what really HAPPENED during the Mission?...

...  What special efforts will HELEN go to in order to try to “FIX” some of the covered-up PROBLEMS that had occurred 30+ years ago during the Mission & their return to Israel as “heroes”?...

...  There’s a great deal of tension built-up as we discover what REALLY TOOK PLACE during the original Assignment & their homecoming...

...  A wonderful level of taut SUSPENSE is created as the true story is “peeled back” bit-by-bit before our eyes...

...  There are excellent performances by all the major stars, especially Helen & Jessica (whose roles allow them to be more outwardly “emotional” in their characterizations)...

...  For the SUCCESSFUL way the intriguing story is unfolded, I’m rating this at 8.25 out of 10 stars...

Review of film: “COLOMBIANA” = Turning a “Delicate FLOWER” into a TOUGH COOKIE

2011, 08-25:

Review of film:  COLOMBIANA

Turning a “Delicate FLOWER into a TOUGH COOKIE...

The place is Bogota, Colombia— a city known for “surrounding” problems of long-lasting DRUG WARS going on...

...  We meet a man – seemingly a “lower-level” drug-dealer --  who’s meeting with the “BIG BOSS” Marco (played by JORDI MOLLA)...

...  Altho Jordi lets the man “go”, it’s clear his life has been THREATENED...

...  The man thus rushes home to try to save his FAMILY from what’s “coming”...  He talks to his wife, & especially his young daughter Cataleya (played by AMANDLA STENBERG)--  who’s named after a delicate Cattaleya ORCHID that grows in the area, as represented by a locket she wears around her neck...

...  He gives the daughter an item he wants her to HIDE from the men who he says will be coming soon...

...  Jordi’s men arrive at the home, & violently KILL the man & his wife--  & heatedly chase the DAUGHTER to try to get the item her father had given her...

...  After a lot of action-filled chases, Zoe gets away, visits “contacts” of her dad, & eventually escapes to the CHICAGO area, where she lives with the family of her father’s BROTHER...  The brother is also involved with drugs, & wants to PROTECT the girl as much as possible...

...  But Cataleya proves to be very “difficult”, & makes clear she wants to be taught more MARTIAL arts so she can try to extract RETRIBUTION on those who’d murdered her family back in Colombia...

...  Altho the uncle is quite willing to teach her his illegalbusinesses”, he isn’t eager to help her in the “FIGHTING” areas--  but she’s very headstrong in her goals...

...  Some years later, we meet the grown-up Cataleya (now played by ZOE SALDANA)...

...  She’s clearly learned a LOT about handling guns and military-type tactics, & obviously is still consumed with the idea of teaching a “LESSON” to the Colombians who’d killed her mom & Dad--  as represented by a “tagline” on the movie poster which says, “REVENGE is Beautiful...

...  Zoe learns that someone involved with the Colombian drug group that hurt her family is in the LOS ANGELES area --  & he’s in the custody of some Federal agents who need to leave him in a local prison before he can be transferred to “THEIR” control...

...  Zoe thus quickly goes out to L.A. to try to “REMOVE” the druggie who’s affiliated with the Colombian group she hates...  She takes great pains to disguise herself & get arrested, so she can be in the same JAIL as the druggie guy she’s after...

...  Then, with considerable planning, she devises & implements a strategy to get out of her cell & go thru AIR-DUCT VENTS to get to the guy, then to KILL him, get back to her cell...

...  She then continues her carefully-thought-out-plan, & ESCAPES from jail as various local & Federal authorities --  & DRUG cartel people – chase “after” her when they’d found out what she’d done...

...  Once she returns home, she returns to seeing a boyfriend named Danny Delaney (MICHAEL VARTAN)--  who likes her a lot, tho he doesn’t really know much about her overall...

...  Due to an inadvertent act by Michael, both the DRUGGIES & the FEDS start to track down Zoe’s whereabouts...  That starts to imperil her FAMILY in the Chicago area & also her, leading to a bunch of PURSUITS & shootouts...

...  Will Zoe’s FAMILY be threatened by either group chasing her?...  Will they provide details about ZOE as the groups want?...

...  Will Michael be forced to reveal things as the groups try to capture Zoe?...

...  Will Zoe be able to get REVENGE on some of the main drug dealers, which has been her goal for years?...  Will she be able to safely get AWAY from the OTHER drug dealers & Feds who are after her?...

...  Some people might view this as somewhat “cartoonish”, in the way you have someone who in-effect is virtually a “SUPER-HEROine”, the way she’s able to plan and carry-out very involved activities to try to exact REVENGE from the drug dealers...

...  But, I found it to be quite CLEVERLY constructed, with very EFFECTIVE “cat-like” movements by Zoe to try to accomplish her various goals...  That’s why I said, you’ll see Zoe turn from being a Delicate FLOWER into a TOUGH COOKIE...

...  Yes, the action is “intense”, but it all “WORKS” & came across as an impressively ENJOYABLE ACTION / THRILLER, with quite good acting, a bunch of “twists”, & a number of good SPECIAL EFFECTS (re explosions & combat & the like)...

...  Accordingly, I’m rating this at 8.0 out of 10 stars...
