Review of film: “WINNIE THE POOH”

2011, 07-16:

Review of film:  WINNIE THE POOH

This new Disney animated movie is in-effect a “follow-up” of their 1966 film about the same characters (subtitled “— AND THE HONEY TREE”) which starred distinctive-voiced Sterling Holloway as Winnie (& he played that role thru 1977 in various “mini” stories)...

...  In this latest feature film set in the Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie (played by JIM CUMMINGS in a voice finely similar to Sterling’s) is (as usual) hungry for “HUNNY”, with a funny “rumbling” stomach (& a cute song) exhibiting that situation...

...  He has a problem finding any container actually holding any honey, & talks to various of his friends trying to get some:

...  There’s overly-wordy Owl (voiced by CRAIG FERGUSON), negative-thinking donkey Eeyore (played by BUD LUCKEY), cheery Kangaroo Kanga (KRISTEN ANDERSON-LOPEZ) & her plucky kid Roo (WYATT DEAN HALL), & sort of awkward Piglet (TRAVIS OATES)...

...  We also meet bombastic tiger Tigger (also voiced by JIM CUMINGS), Rabbit (TOM KENNY), a sort of “scary” imaginery character called a Backson (voiced by HUELL HOWSER) which they think has “captured” the “human” character Christopher Robin (voiced by JACK BOULTER), & with JOHN CLEESE as Narrator...

...  Not much really “HAPPENS” in the story--  a group of the main characters search for Eeyore’s tail...

...  And, later, they fall into a PIT & don’t know how to get out (tho the Owl could simply fly out & get help, but doesn’t “think” of it)...  Plus, Winnie keeps trying various ways to get the honey he craves...

...  This is NOT particularly “my” type of animated film.  It’s designed for very LITTLE kids, & thus the story (& a lot of the animation) is very “simplistic” & not really especially FUNNY or clever...

...  But, it’s got some catchy little SONGS (mostly by KRISTEN ANDERSON-LOPEZ & ROBERT LOPEZ), & the numerous youngsters in the audience applauded heartily at the conclusion of the 69-minute film...

...  I liked the way they put some “extra” little animated scenes with the characters in during the long CREDITS, including one at the very end where you finally see the “BACKSON”...

...  So, considering that it’s designed for lovers of the A.A. Milne characters, I’m rating it at 7.5 out of 10 stars for an intended audience of YOUNG KIDS (who it’s “aimed” at & who seemed very HAPPY with it)...
